Ashley Creek Petroglyph

J. Q. Jacobs.

This photograph of an ancient American rock carving in present-day Utah can tell us a great deal about ancient American culture. Ancient Americans created various rock carvings and drawings, known as petroglyphs, which can still be found throughout the Southwest. This petroglyph depicts a series of figures. The largest and most prominent of these figures wears elaborate regalia consisting of a headdress, breastplate, belt, and skirt, and carries an intricately-rendered shield. Judging from these elements, he is most likely a chief, a warrior, or both.
